The Seoul Design Festival 2019, Korea’s largest design exhibition, opened on December 4 at Coex, which is located in Samseong-dong, Seoul.

The Seoul Design Festival (SDF) is Korea’s leading platform to exchange design content. Over the past 17 years, the SDF has supported the successful promotion of 1,533 brands and promoted more than four thousand designers. To date, more than one million people have visited the SDF. Last year alone, 100,000 people visited the event.

 

Over 300 design brands and designers participate in and present a variety of content at the SDF. This has helped successfully reinterpret Seoul, where the latest trends and traditions coexist, under the theme of “Seoul Edition.”

Theme Pavilion, now in its first year, showcases four art directors’ collaboration on the theme of “Day and Night in Seoul” to highlight the true appeal of the local community, not just what people see through the naked eye in Seoul. The unique exhibition space—infused with the synergy of four people and four characteristics—also features the symbolic graphic identity of Seoul, which mixes the past and the present, increasing the visual enjoyment experience for visitors.

In the Young Designer Promotion section, which focuses on the development of the domestic design industry and discovering new designers, 60 newly emerging designers have the opportunity to promote their self-branding. At the special pavilion for notable illustrators of the year, which was just established this year, illustrators such as HANADURI and Sarim Lee, as well as Joguman Studio and sosiminwork, have participated to present artworks with characters that reflect people’s lives in the contemporary era. Two leading Taiwanese illustrators selected by Huashan 1914 Creative Park, a creative studio in Taiwan, have also participated, attracting the attention of the public.

On the first and second day of the festival (Dec. 4-5), Design Seminar will take place. For this seminar, seven experts from six countries will make speeches: ▲ Ville Kokkonen, former designer for Artek and currently professor at Aalto University ▲ Bethan Laura Wood, a world-class designer from the UK who is well known for bold colors and patterns ▲ Soren X. Frahm, a designer at the full-service innovation house Artlinco A/S and a design ambassador for Denmark ▲ Pedro Franco, a world-class designer from Brazil and the founder of the global design brand A Lot of Brazil ▲ Daniel Heckscher, an architect at the design studio Note ▲ Charlie Clark, a specialist at the trend forecasting company WGSN ▲ Riccardo Balbo, an architect and Academic Director of the world-renowned design school IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) in Italy.
